چکیده

"Aluminium hydroxide dissolves in acids. From its solution in hydrochloric acid, an aluminlum salt, aluminium chloride A1C13, 6H20, is obtained. I t also combines with strong bases, dissolving for instance in a solution of sodium hydroxide and forming an aluminate, NaA102 . . . . According to the best knowledge we have on the subject, the molecule of aluminium hydroxide has the following structure or arrangement of its atoms AI(-O-H)3. I t is readily seen that the cleavage of the molecules may produce, either aluminium and hydroxide ions, characteristic ions of a base, or aluminate and hydrogen ions, characteristic ions of an acid: A1 +++ + 3 OH ~ A1 (-O-H)3 -~ A102 + H + + H20. Programmable co-assembly of oppositely charged microgels.

Here we report the development of an aqueous, self-assembling system of oppositely charged colloids leading towards particle arrangements with controlled order. The colloidal system consists of two types of particles, each consisting of refractive index matched colloidal core-shell microgel particles, which are either negatively charged or amphoteric. By slowly decreasing the pH of our system b...

Amphoteric Behavior of Complex Systems

The amphoteric behavior of a system of two amphoteric components is theoretically examined; and this is shown to correspond more nearly with certain of the physical and chemical behaviors of living tissues than does the concept of a simple ampholyte.

Isoelectric Points for the Mycelium of Fungi

1. Mycelium of Rhizopus nigricans when stained with certain acid and basic dyes and washed with buffer mixtures of 0.1 M phosphoric acid and sodium hydroxide responded much like an amphoteric colloid with an isoelectric point near pH 5.0. 2. When grown on potato dextrose agar the reaction of which was varied with phosphoric acid the extent of colony growth of Rhizopus nigricans plotted against ...

The Reversal of the Sign of the Charge of Collodion Membranes by Trivalent Cations

1. Trivalent cations cause a collodion membrane covered with a protein film to be charged positively while they do not produce such an effect on collodion membranes not possessing a protein film. The same had been found for the reversal of the sign of charge of the membrane by acid. 2. This reversal in the sign of charge of the membrane by trivalent cations occurs on the alkaline side of the is...

Amphoteric Colloids. I. Cii_emical Influence of the Hydrogen Ion Concentration

I t is often stated (Pauli, H6ber, and others) that both ions of a neutral salt affect the physical properties of an amphoteric electrolyte (ampholyte) simultaneously and in the opposite sense; so that the total result is the algebraic sum of the opposite action of the oppositely charged ions of the neutral salt. 1 The writer has beelz able to show by experiments on gelatin and on pig's bladder...
